You know what’s in the past?

Bleak, boring and inefficient packaging. Not just that – the entire idea that packaging is just necessary evil that we have to use for our products is already in the garbage bin. Pretty much everyone, from manufacturers to the customers, are aware that good packaging is always welcome. But what if we made it… both pretty AND useful?!

Okay, right, you can argue that “useful” is not the best word here. After all, the packaging will be, well, wrapping and protecting the item on the inside. It’s not about reinventing the wheel, but rather about picking the best wheel for the job – and upgrading it here and there to make out of them.

So, without further ado – here are our tips and tricks that will help you optimize your packaging solutions!

1. Size matters

Think about your item, the one that you want to sell. Now take a step back and try to visualize the store, the shelf, the place where it will be sold. You know what I mean, right? As I wrote earlier – size matters! But let me be a bit more specific – size matters in both ways. Picking a smaller, more fitting pouch will make it much easier to store, transport and cut on the manufacturing cost. On the other hand – let’s be honest! Big stuff will catch the eye of your customer, while also allowing you to experiment more with the design and looks of the packaging – though, of course, you won’t fit so much of it on the shelf.

2. Make it practical

I would argue that if packaging’s lifespan shouldn’t end with you consuming the product inside. Zero waste movement is, of course, extremely important and it is constantly gaining popularity in the society. But even if you aren’t a follower of that lifestyle – your customers probably are! Consider picking heat seal flat pouches that can be re-sealed, for example with zip lock. That way it can be cleaned, refilled and reused, instead of going straight to trash. If your item needs a rigid packaging, why not check out if they are also biodegradable? These small additions and tweaks will leave your customers amazed by how stupidly simple they are!

3. Catch their eye!

Alright, this one couldn’t be simpler! Pick something lavish, big and colorful and we’re done here. Right…? I mean, yes, I guess it could work, but that also means that you don’t really understand your brand. If your product is homemade and heartwarming, I’m pretty sure that a quality brown, kraft paper will be much more appealing than a plastic wrapper. Then again, if you want to grab their attention instantly and push those to more impulsive purchase, then surely a mixture of colors, fractures and catchy phrases and words to pull them in. There are many approaches to that, so think which one would fit your merchandise the most!

4. Think outside the box…

I mean, literally! Think outside the box – out of their rigid, cube shapes. Every product is different, so there’s no such thing as a one, perfect shape to pick. If you want your merchandise to stand out, think about how you can tweak that with something as simple as its shape. Strong, rigid and stackable boxes makes me think of reliability, durability, firmness. If I grab a paper-like bag, delicate and vintage-looking, it makes me think of home, leisure and warmth. Smaller pouches and bags will instead make people want to open them, use and enjoy the luxurious inside – that’s why so many people sell spices, handmade pastries or fragrant herbs in tiny pouches, instead of a bulky box.

5. … Or maybe take a look inside it!

Sometimes your item can speak for itself better than any advertisement. Why not show it to the world, then? Many packaging options have a transparent window on the front in order to show what’s inside the window pouch. This, in return, helps to draw them to your item and judge the quality and looks instead of relying on just the packaging. There’s something else I personally love about these windows – and that’s the fact that I can instantly see, how much of the stuff is still inside. I don’t have to open the box or try to judge it on shaking it, but instead it’s just quick peek and done!

6. Colorful colors

There are so many shades and hues of green that it’s impossible to count them all. Think about it. Limes, pines, grass, emeralds, spinach… All of these things ARE green, right? But every shade of it will, obviously, look different on your packaging. If your product is inviting, meant to be bought and enjoyed instantly – go for bold, bright and vivid colors, lure the attention and make them pop out from the surroundings. If you prefer going more lavish and luxurious, then tamed, colder colors will be your friend. But above all else remember that it’s the color that’s the first thing people will see on the shelf from the distance – so own it and make sure they will connect it with your product now!

7. Experiment and take risks

Yes, I know that experimentation is scary. You have to check new things, adapt to the changes, and see if they work out. But why should you stick to the beaten path? Look at it this way – you have almost infinite possibilities when it comes to packaging your product. Why stop at the very basic solution? By mixing different ideas and tricks that I’ve written about above, you can come up with your unique packaging and present it to the world. After all it’s there not just to protect your product, but also to promote and sell it.
